Mercedes 280CE (1983) SOLD

Classy Mercedes 80’s, C123 coupe in dark-blue metallic with hard-wearing navy/light blue stripe cloth seats and door card inserts and zebrano wood. Historic tax and MoT exempt.

This essentially sound and solid car is offered for sale as it is owing to our having too many cars requiring light attention. There is a little patination to the paintwork and interior reflecting the age of the car, but the chassis and body are solid and with a little TLC the car could be used as a daily driver – like many older Mercedes! The electric door windows and sunroof operate well but one of the back window mechanisms needs attention. The car starts and runs pulling smoothly through the gears. On collection it was driven by us over fifty miles. The tyres are in good condition and the exhaust and radiator have evidently been replaced as part of a major mechanical overhaul, including brakes, at around 90k by the previous owner. There is partial service history with the car and the paperwork includes some old MoTs and invoices for work done. We have checked the fluids, including the automatic gearbox, and there are no obvious leaks. An issue with over-revving of the engine on idle has been sorted, the car now drives well, with kickdown functioning properly, but there is a knack to starting when warm, probably caused by temporary over-fuelling, and the ignition key appears not to lock the doors..

Over a roughly ten-year period from late 1975 almost 2.7 million Mercedes W123s of all varieties were made of which just under 100,000 were coupes and only approximately 32,000 had the largest petrol engine like this car. These coupes share the W123 range’s reputation for sturdiness with many of all varieties still in faithful service. They have proper four-seat capacity and a sizeable boot which, together with the great Mercedes 2.8 fuel injected, six-cylinder engine and automatic gearbox, make them realistically useable, practical classics. Their newfound status as style icons is recognised by their use in fashion photoshoots. To our eyes, just the right amount of chrome, that radiator shell, plus steel wheels with the chrome and matching painted centre wheel covers, produce an elegance greater than any of the alloy wheel options then available. As their chief engineer said at the time, “We are as unimpressed by revolutionary leaps of style as by fashionable gimmicks.”.

As the car requires some tinkering to the items mentioned, the car is offered at an attractive price.
