This is a low mileage Mercedes W124 estate from the almost bulletproof period of Mercedes car construction in the 1980s. The low mileage is accounted for by the fact that the car was originally sold in the Isle of Man and remained there until recently imported into the UK.
Metallic green (sea foam poly/willow green DB261), 1997cc petrol, manual gearbox, cream stripe standard M-B fabric (055) interior and cream carpets. Comes with a rigid plastic boot liner which has helped preserve the interior. The outside and inside are in good condition for the age of the car with only minor age-related blemishes and insignificant rust. The interior has been protected by a full set of seat covers (not available) as well as the boot liner which stays with the car. There is some minor splitting to the wood on the lower centre console but the dash is otherwise in good condition.
First sold by Whitestone Garage near the Manx airport, they held the M-B franchise for the IoM until 2018. The car was registered on the island in January 1989 and serviced there by its three owners until imported to the UK in late 2020. A UK registration was issued by DVLA in Feb 2021. The first owner was a legal official on the island and the second and third were collectors based there. The fourth and current owner is a private enthusiast.
Servicing was carried out by the M-B agents on the island until 2013 and then an independent garage there up to 2019. The original service booklet is in the paperwork and records stamped services at the following mileages and dates:
M-B dealer: 895 (new vehicle check), March 1989; 4,382,March 1990; 6,115, Feb 1994; 12,815, Oct 1999; 16,771, Feb 2003; and 25,915, Dec 2013.
IoM independent: 31,482, May 2017; and 35,031, Nov 2019.
UK German car independent: 35,951, Feb 2021; and 43,223, Dec 2022 (interim service).
The last two services included, among other repairs: new tailgate struts, central locking pump and propshaft bearing (2021). When the car was imported to the UK in Dec 2020 it received: complete set of fuses, front shock absorbers and gaiters, anti-roll bar bushes, rear brake discs, pads and shoes, exhaust repair and an MoT (no advisories). It has subsequently been MoTed every December since, lastly in 2023 (with no advisories). The full record is on the DVLA website. Because of the replacement central locking pump, this aspect of the car – which can be notoriously unreliable with age – works as it should.
Other material work since being imported includes: new lock and steering lock, April 2021; new wiper motor, Oct 2023; rear pads and discs, Jan 2023; new battery and replaced broken spring, Dec 2023. This is all supported by invoices.
This is an excellent condition for its age example of M-B’s executive workhorse in the less usual manual specification. Having been well cared for by its previous owners it is now ready for further, regular reliable use or occasional outings as a new owner requires. It comes complete with an official M-B owner’s manual for this model, stamped M-B service booklet, a working radio and a set of spare keys. This car is being sold on behalf of a good client of ours.
Like its predecessor – Mercedes’ first factory-built estate, examples of which are now well into five figures – the values of these very usable W124 second generation estates are only going one way. Frequently cars of this type are imported from Japan. While strictly also imported, this car has been much closer to home all its life and, crucially, is UK specification, as practically all new cars in the IoM are, being supplied direct from the UK.
Offers are invited for this modern classic.
