Jaguar XJC 4.2 coupé auto (1977) superb, low mileage

First registered on 1 January 1977, this is a 1976 build example of the remarkably rare Jaguar XJ coupé. One of the most beautiful cars produced by Jaguar, certainly out of its full four-seater models, the XJC only lasted from 1975 to 1977 and was never available in the US.

The XJ coupé was announced in 1973 following the launch of the revelatory XJ6 saloon five years earlier. However, production didn’t start until 1975 and only lasted until late 1977. Although by then the series 2 saloons had been launched, the coupés were built on the short wheelbase XJ6 series 1 floorplan. They were available with straight-six or V12 engines and in Jaguar or Daimler versions. They married timeless features such as the frameless windows - allowing a full-length pillarless appearance when fully retracted – and longer, coupé doors, with a more period look deriving from aspects such as the vinyl roof. Inside was very similar to the luxury of the standard saloon with minor adjustments to adapt to the coupé bodyshell. Total production of all versions just made it over five figures.

This car is a Jaguar 4.2 straight-six engined car with the Borg Warner three-speed automatic gearbox. Arguably less troublesome than the V12, by the end of production, just under six and half thousand of this particular specification had been made. Deriving from the period before Jaguar started to suffer from real issues in production quality, this car is a fabulous period yellow - officially Jaguar Green Sand - with a superb tan leather interior and the chrome wheels also fitted to later E-types. It attracts admiring glances wherever it goes. We collected it from near Loch Lomond and drove it back to East Lothian, a distance of just under 100 miles and it performed superbly and in comfort. While with us it has required only minor attention to the brakes in order to pass its MoT.

The car has had a mere five owners in total and shows an odometer reading of just 41k. It comes with a sheaf of MoTs since the early 1990s supporting the low mileage, as well as invoices which attest to a programme of care starting under its last but one owner since 2010. These embrace new leather in the front, new headlining, a hide kit (all 2010), a partial repaint (2012) and the fitment of an array of replacement external trim. These include the wheel arch trims (2010) which do not disguise any nasty corrosion. Indeed, the body is in remarkably good condition with only the tiniest of blemishes, the vinyl roof is unmarked and the interior leather and wood is stunning as would be expected. The car comes with a period stereo and driver’s handbook for the coupé version.

This beautiful vehicle has a current MoT to December 2018.
