Jaguar Mk IX saloon (1961)

This is a very low mileage Mk IX Jaguar from the last year of production. An automatic gearbox with dash-mounted speed hold makes best use of the performance from the largest version (3781cc) of the XK engine installed in the Mk VII-IX series. This Jaguar is now fully prepared for use or, at this price, as an investment.

A substantial history file accompanies this car with many old MOT certificates, tax discs, invoices and insurance records covering its 48k miles. The car has spent most of its life in the Humberside area of England. Papers include the original manufacturer's warranty card, driver’s handbook and 1963 list of dealers and service agents for the marque.

Since acquiring the car, we have subjected it to a comprehensive programme of refurbishment while retaining its overall character acquired over the years of evidently careful use. We have given it a complete respray in a contrasting colour scheme of deep red over light grey, including the wheels. Besides being a colour appropriate for the period, the deep red suits the red leather interior and is an improvement over the original dull and very tired two-tone grey. For the respray, as much of the brightwork as it was possible to remove was taken off and a small amount of repair welding carried out to the front of one of the rear wings. So, while not the total body off respray of mythology, over several weeks the body has been thoroughly stripped, repaired where necessary and smoothed down before any painting was started. The chrome finish is all original and, in order to raise the car to show standard, it would benefit from some replacement (these parts are available). However, as it is by no means unacceptable as it is, we decided to leave that decision to the purchaser.

This is a car which wears its age well and which has not been flashily restored. It looks very smart. We have also replaced all the tyres and undertaken some work on the front suspension for which all new parts were used. The interior is beautifully mature with that patina which should not be covered up. The leather has simply been cleaned and fed. Similarly, the engine bay has been cleaned and then left as it is.

The car runs extremely well with smooth automatic gear changes and plenty of power when required. The whole driving experience is one of effortless ease, belying the car's bulk. Even the original radio works well!

All in all, this is a very good car which can be used without concern. The original and valuable registration number is included and the car has an MOT until end March 2011.
